WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Case Western Reserve on Saturday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. After a strong first half, shooting woes in the field and at the free throw line doomed the Yellow Jackets, who fell 69-49 to the Spartans.
Waynesburg (0-2) flew out of the gate and posted a 16-6 lead after 6:03 of play. Five different Yellow Jackets scored during the surge, including freshman
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown), who tallied the first nine points of the game for the home team.
The Spartans (1-0) answered the Jacket challenge with a 12-0 run that gave them a two-point edge at 18-16. Freshman
Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) gave Waynesburg the final point of the quarter and made the score 18-17 after 10 minutes.
The Jackets regained a four-point lead by scoring seven of the first nine points of the second quarter. Henkins tallied four of the points on a trey and a free throw, while sophomore
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) drilled a three pointer of her own.
The two teams battled back-and-forth over the remainder of the half and by the time halftime rolled around, Case held a 33-31 edge.
Senior
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) tied the score at 33-33 by dropping in the first field goal of the third quarter, but the Spartans fired back with five points of their own. After Wolf ended the brief run, Case took firm control of the contest by outscoring the host team 13-3 to end the period with a 51-38 lead.
The Spartans' superior size and improved three-point shooting allowed them to build leads as large as 23 points in the fourth quarter. Waynesburg whittled the deficit down to 14 points, but got no closer to completing the comeback.
Henkins led Waynesburg with a team-high 11 points, while sophomore
Emma Seto (Allison, Pa. / Brownsville) paced the Jackets with a squad-best eight rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets play their first of three-straight road games on Wednesday, Nov. 15, when they head to Pitt Greensburg. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
