WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 2) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Saint Vincent on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets trailed by a point after the first quarter, but Saint Vincent's offense broke out for 24 points in the second and rode that big period to a 69-60 win.
Waynesburg (0-7, 0-4) got off to a solid start and led 7-5 after 2:30 of play. Saint Vincent (4-3, 3-1) tallied the next five points and grabbed 10-7 edge. A 6-2 surge from the home team gave the Jackets the lead back at 13-12, before the final field goal of the opening 10 minutes pushed the Green and Gold back ahead 14-13.
As previously mentioned, momentum swung squarely into the Bearcats' favor in the second, as they outscored their hosts 24-14 and took a 38-27 lead into halftime. Saint Vincent's advantage swelled to 40-27 after a pair of free throws, but Waynesburg battled to pull within five points of tying the game (51-46) with 53 seconds left to play in the quarter. The Bearcats knocked down the final two field goals of the period to take a 55-46 lead into the fourth.
Unfortunately, Waynesburg was unable to pull any closer to completing its comeback, as the two teams split the final 28 points of the game.
Sophomore
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) made good use of her 13 minutes off the bench and tallied a team-high 13 points on an efficient six-of-eight shooting from the floor. Freshman
Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) added 10 points, while freshman
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) chipped in nine on three made three pointers.
Freshman
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) proved to be a force on the boards by tying for the game lead with 12 rebounds.
The Jackets' efforts were stymied by struggles at the free throw line. Waynesburg connected on just nine-of-25 attempts from the charity stripe.
Waynesburg plays its third-straight game at home on Wednesday, Dec. 6, when it hosts Geneva. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
