MEADVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2022-23 season on Saturday with a road trip to Allegheny on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 15-9 lead after one quarter, but the Gators bounced back and spoiled the visitors' upset bid in a 71-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup.
Waynesburg (2-23, 2-18) raced out to an 8-0 lead thanks to a game-opening basket by freshman
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) followed by six-straight points from junior
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside). Allegheny (13-12, 12-8) broke up the run with a two-point field goal, but freshman
Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) put her team right back up by eight points at 10-2.
The final 4:29 of the opening period was played fairly evenly as the Gators scored seven of the next 12 points. Unfortunately, Allegheny's offense caught fire in the second quarter and produced 24 points to the Jackets' 12. By the time the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, the Blue and Gold held a 33-27 advantage.
Freshman
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) cut her team's six-point deficit in half with a three pointer to open the third quarter. The Gators responded by tallying the next nine points and growing their lead to 42-30. Their run continued until the Jackets found themselves in a 49-31 hole with 5:14 remaining in the quarter.
The Orange and Black was able to right the ship somewhat and pulled to within 13 points at 52-39 by the time the quarter came to a close.
Freshman
Madison Platt (Follansbee, W.Va. / Brooke) cut Waynesburg's deficit down to 10 with a trey to open the fourth period. Another three pointer from Platt capped a 13-6 run by the Jackets that once again had them thinking upset.
Unfortunately, Allegheny not only halted the run, but responded with six unanswered points to jump ahead 64-55 with 2:44 remaining in the contest. Miller scored her team's final three points of the season from long range to pull the Jackets to within six points (64-58) of tying the score. That was as close as they came to completing the comeback, as the home team dropped in the final seven points of the day to seal the victory.
Wesolowski and Platt tied for the team lead with 14 points each. The latter accomplished the feat by going five-for-seven from the floor, including an impressive four-for-five effort from three-point range. Fellow freshman
Emma Seto (Allison, Pa. / Brownsville) yanked down a squad-best nine rebounds. Seto ends her debut collegiate season ranked fifth in the PAC in rebounding at 9.2 boards per contest.
Senior
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) paced Waynesburg with five assists.
