Baseball wins 10-inning thriller against Trine

Jackets crank out 15 hits in walk-off 7-6 win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 9) – The Waynesburg University baseball team squared off with Trine for a Thursday matchup at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Yellow Jackets unleashed a 15-hit barrage and came back from a 5-2 deficit to win a thrilling 7-6 10-inning decision against the Thunder.

After two scoreless innings, Trine (4-5) took a 1-0 edge in the top of the third, before Waynesburg (2-4) built its first lead in the bottom of the inning. Junior Nolan Vertullo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Fayette) tied the game by driving in freshman Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels). The next batter, sophomore Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) produced a successful out that allowed junior Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) to sprint home make the score 2-1.

Momentum swung back to Trine, which scored a pair in the fourth and two more in the sixth to move ahead 5-2. The Jackets didn't' shy away from the challenge, and sophomore Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) got two of those runs back with a single that plated junior Lane Ours (Moorefield, W.Va. / Moorefield) and sophomore Tyler Sullivan (Wesley Chapel, Fla. / Wesley Chapel) to make the score 5-4.

Following a scoreless seventh, Trine rebuilt a multi-run lead (6-4) with a tally in the eighth. However, the Jacket defense silenced the Thunder bats from that point forward, while the Waynesburg offense went to work on a comeback.

Bell got things rolling with an RBI double in the eighth that scored Pratt and cut the Jacket deficit to 6-5. Still trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth and running out of opportunities, Waynesburg took advantage of an error that put Vertullo on first. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and set up sophomore Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) for a game-tying double that made the score 6-6.

Trine looked primed to retake the lead in the top of the 10th, but Williams, who had moved to pitcher for the ninth inning, induced a double play to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the inning, Engelmore struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch on strike three. Pratt followed with a sacrifice bunt that put his teammate in scoring position and brought Bell to the plate with one out on the board. Bell came through in the clutch with a walk-off RBI single to set off a joyous celebration for the victors.

Five different Jackets logged double-digit hits in the victory. Bell led the attack by going four-for-six with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Pratt continued to build on a fantastic debut season with a three-for-four showing at the dish with a walk and a run scored. Vertullo, Ours and junior Marcos Mendez (Ponce, Puerto Rico / Westminster (Md.) connected on two base knocks each.

Williams earned the win on the mound after working two innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and one walk on the day. Sophomore Bryce Bedilion (Clarksville, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) got the start and allowed five runs, just one of which was earned, on three hits and two walks. He tallied three strikeouts in the outing.

The Jackets are scheduled to be back in action on Friday, March 10, with a nine-inning game against Rochester Institute of Technology. First pitch is set to be thrown at 4:30 p.m.
