WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 29) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Pitt Greensburg on Wednesday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. The Yellow jackets swept the twin bill by the final scores of 3-0 and 13-0 (five innings) to earn their fourth and fifth-straight victories.
Waynesburg's (11-3) dynamic pitching duo of sophomore lefty
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) and freshman righty
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) stole the show with some truly stingy numbers. Wilson improved to 6-2 on the season with a complete-game shutout in game one. She allowed just two singles, didn't walk a batter and racked up nine strikeouts.
Stemple posted similar numbers in game two. She yielded four singles and no walks, while matching Wilson with nine strikeouts, albeit in two fewer innings.
Offense was tough to come by for either team in the opener, as Waynesburg tallied seven hits in support of Wilson. Senior
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) shined the brightest in the early contest, as she went a perfect three-for-three at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) also reached base three times on an RBI double and two walks.
Freshman
Jasmine Demaske (Waynesburg, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) cranked her Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC)-leading fourth triple.
Game two looked like it would be another closely-contested affair, as Waynesburg led jut 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Brookman, senior
Reghan Benschoter (Newark, Ohio / Granville) and freshman
Alyssa Rager (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) all logged RBIs in the game's early going. The game was ultimately decided in the bottom of the fourth when Waynesburg scored 10 runs on five hits, three walks/hit batsmen and two errors.
Hunter, Brookman, freshman
Paige McAvoy (Canonsburg, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) and sophomore
Dilyn Roberts (Sellersburg, Ind. / Henryville) tallied two hits each in support of Stemple, who upped her win-loss record to 4-1.
Roberts scored a game-high three runs, while Brookman, Benschoter and Rager racked up three RBIs each.
The Jackets will try to keep their momentum rolling into tomorrow, when they host Chatham for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3 p.m.
