ERIE, Pa. (April 11) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled north to Penn State Behrend on Tuesday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with the Lions. The Yellow Jackets were swept by the final scores of 25-4 and 4-1.
Waynesburg (9-17) fell behind 2-0 after the first inning of game one, but bounced back with a run in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single by freshman
Alek Wagor (South Cairo, N.Y. / Cairo-Durham). Unfortunately, Behrend (11-12) responded with multiple runs in each of the game's final six innings to secure the victory.
Despite the lopsided loss, there were definite highlights for Waynesburg, which was giving many of its younger players a chance to start. Sophomore
Bryce Rayl (Moundsville, W.Va. / John Marshall) shined the brightest by going three-for-four with two doubles and two RBIs.
Sophomore
Tyler Sullivan (Wesley Chapel, Fla. / Wesley Chapel) and sophomore
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) both added two-for-four showings at the dish.
Game two was highlighted by the efforts of freshman starting pitcher
Hudson Pincavitch (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central), who was solid in his first collegiate start on the mound. Pincavitch allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks over seven innings. He logged a pair of strikeouts in the late contest.
Another member of the Jackets' freshman class,
Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene), staked the Jackets to the early lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning that sent Sullivan sprinting home from third.
Unfortunately, Behrend answered with two runs in the second, a run in the third and the game's final tally in the fourth. Four different Jackets picked up a hit each in the setback.
Waynesburg returns to PAC competition today, as Westminster comes to town for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
