WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 11) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Denison on Tuesday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. While both teams struggled to score runs, the Yellow Jackets' talented pitching twosome of sophomore
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay Battelle) and freshman
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) were outstanding in leading the Jackets to a sweep of the Big Red.
Wilson got the ball in game one and ran her eye-popping scoreless inning streak extend to 33 before a two-out bloop base hit in the top of the third allowed Denison (10-10) to take a 1-0 lead. However, Wilson got her revenge by not only shutting the opposition out for the final four innings of play, but by driving home the game-winning runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) led off with a single and advanced to second when junior
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) followed with a walk. Two batters later, junior
Sydney Senay (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) drew a free pass to load the bases. After the second out of the inning was recorded, Wilson stepped up and sharply lined a two-run single to right that scored Roberts and Hunter with the game-tying and game-winning tallies.
The Jackets (19-3) kept the top of the seventh drama-free, as they induced a pop up to second, a groundout to the pitching circle and line out to right field to seal up the win.
Wilson improved her record to a PAC-leading 10-2 and despite giving up a run, kept her ERA at a league-best 1.08. She allowed just four hits, three of which were singles, a walk and a hit batsman with eight strikeouts. Three of those punchouts came in the first, as Wilson struck out the side in order. She added two more K's in the second.
Freshman
Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) paced a five-hit Waynesburg output with a pair of singles.
Stemple showed resolve and calm under pressure by stranding a combined five base runners in the first two innings. From there, she allowed just three hits over the last five innings to move to 8-1 on the 2023 campaign. Her complete-game shutout also dropped her ERA to 1.78, which is good for third in the league and just .04 higher than the second-place hurler.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the first when Hunter doubled in freshman
Jasmine Demaske (Waynesburg, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan), who walked and stole second to lead off the frame.
Once again, Waynesburg tallied five hits against Denison. Brookman came up with two of those knocks on a pair of singles.
The Jackets are back in action today as they open the unofficial second half of their PAC schedule with a road trip to Bethany. First pitch of the league twin bill is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
