WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 15) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Geneva on Saturday as the Yellow Jackets held an alumni day celebration. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes turned out to be poor party guests, as they swept the Jackets by the final scores of 6-0 and 5-3.
The losses ended the Jackets' 15-game winning streak. However, Waynesburg (21-5, 10-2) still sits atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings in a tie with Saint Vincent.
The first two innings belonged to the pitchers, before Geneva (15-13, 8-4) exploded for five runs in the third. The visitors added a tally in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Waynesburg was only out-hit by a 9-8 margin, but stranded nine runners in the opener. This trend started early, as freshman
Jasmine Demaske (Waynesburg, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) led off the bottom of the first with her team-leading sixth triple, but was stranded at third base.
Sophomore
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) started and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on nine hits, a walk and two hit batsmen.
Demaske singled, tripled and stole a base to lead the Jacket offense. Junior
Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) posted a two-for-three effort in game one.
Game two got off to a similar start, as Geneva built up a 5-0 lead after four innings. Unlike game one, Waynesburg was finally able to break through on offense by posting two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh.
The Jackets got on the board with a historic RBI double by senior
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey). By driving in sophomore
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan), Hunter logged her 143
rd collegiate base hit, which puts her in the top spot in program history. That wasn't Hunter's only highlight of game two, as she stole home on a double steal to make the score 5-2.
Hunter logged her second RBI of the day in the seventh on a fielder's choice that plated sophomore
Dilyn Roberts (Sellersburg, Ind. / Henryville). Unfortunately, a tagout on the play also ended the Waynesburg comeback bid.
Higgins collected two of Waynesburg's five hits in the late contest, both of which were doubles.
Freshman
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) got the start in game two and worked all seven innings in the circle. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits and a walk. Stemple piled up seven strikeouts in her most recent start.
The Jackets will look to start a new winning streak on Tuesday, April 18, when they travel to Grove City for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
