WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 26) – The Waynesburg University baseball team wrapped up its home and Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedules by hosting Grove City for a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets bounced back from a 12-2 loss in game one to defeat the Wolverines 5-3.
The victory in game two gives Waynesburg (13-23, 9-11) the unique distinction of being the only team to date to defeat both Grove City (26-8, 13-3) and Washington & Jefferson, which are currently tied for the top spot in the PAC standings.
Game one started and ended on sour notes as the Wolverines scored six runs in the first inning and four in the seventh-and-final frame. In between those two bookend innings, GCC scored a run in the second and another in the fourth. The Jackets picked up both their tallies in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a single by sophomore
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) that plated junior
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) and sophomore
Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey).
Freshman
Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) started on the mound and couldn't overcome a rough first frame. He took the loss after allowing seven runs, only three of which were earned, on four hits and two walks over 1.1 innings of work.
Freshman
Dalton Lucey (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) settled things down and pitched well over the first five innings of a 5.1-inning performance. Unfortunately, the Wolverines big seventh inning ultimately led to Lucey yielding five earned runs on seven hits and a walk.
Game two flew by in front of the Jackets' home crowd, as the nine-inning affair was wrapped up in just one hour and 45 minutes. A big reason for that was the efficient effort put forth by freshman starting pitcher Ethan Ehrhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield). Erhard improved to 3-3 on the year after scattering eight hits, seven of which were singles, and one walk over 7.1 innings of work. He piled up six strikeouts in his most recent victory.
Erhard turned the ball over to sophomore
Bryce Bedilion (Clarksville, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan), who moved in from center field to the bump to record a 1.2-inning save.
Not only did Waynesburg avoid another poor start, but it was able to jump out to a 4-1 lead after two innings. Grove City scored the game's first run in the top of the frame, before the Jackets rebounded with a four spot in the bottom half.
Junior
Lane Ours (Moorefield, W.Va. / Moorefield) gave Waynesburg it's first lead of the day when he doubled in Bell and Engelmore. The next batter, sophomore
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) tripled his team's advantage by blasting his first collegiate homerun, a two-run bomb, that made the score 4-1.
The score remained the same through innings three and four before Grove City cut its deficit down to 4-2 in the fifth. Waynesburg got the run back in the bottom of the seventh when Pratt singled home junior
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South).
The Wolverines posted the day's final run in the eighth, but Bedilion and the Jacket defense shut down the potent Grove City bats to seal up the victory.
Waynesburg outhit the opposition 10-9 in the late contest. Engelmore, Bell and Burner tallied two hits each, while five different Jackets scored one run each.
With its conference schedule wrapped up, the Jackets are off until May 6, when they travel to Denison for a season-ending doubleheader against the Big Red. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
