LAST TIME OUT
Both of Saturday's participants are looking to put week three of the 2023 season as far behind them as possible. Waynesburg fell 41-10 at 14
th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, while Westminster dropped a 48-3 contest at Washington & Jefferson.
Â
LAST TIME THEY MET
Waynesburg was thinking upset in 2022 when it took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter against Westminster at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Titans had other ideas, however, as they rattled off 27-straight points on their way to a 30-10 win. Quarterback Tyler McGowan completed 18-of-29 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns in the victory, while Ryan Gomes rushed for 175 yards on just 19 carries. Waynesburg was led offensively by wide receiver
Dakota Romantino (Charleroi, Pa. / Charleroi), who pulled in seven catches for 86 yards both of which were game highs. Safety
Brennan Boron (St. Mary's, W.Va. / St. Mary's) broke up three passes in the loss. Speaking of defense, Waynesburg's top seven tacklers from last year's game are no longer on the roster.
Â
KEEP AN EYE ON
Sophomore
Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) has developed into a reliable receiving option in the Waynesburg passing attack. He comes into today ranked first on the team in receptions (14), receiving yards (145) and touchdown catches (2). Trout ranks sixth in the PAC in total catches, sixth in catches per game and fourth in touchdown catches.
Â
NEWS AND NOTES
When it comes to penalties, Waynesburg and Westminster couldn't be any more different. The Yellow Jackets head into Saturday as the most penalized team in the PAC (39 flags, 348 total yards, 116.0 ypg), while the Titans have proven to be the most disciplined program in the league, giving up just over six flags per game for 45.3 yards per contest. Interestingly, the Jackets' opposition has also struggled when it comes to giving up free yardage, which, through three weeks, they are doing at an average of 104.3 yards per contest.
Â
To say that Waynesburg and Westminster faced stiff tests last week would be an understatement. Their respective opponents, Carnegie Mellon and Washington & Jefferson, enter this week tied for third in the country with 3.33 points per game given up per contest.
Â
Fifth-year running back
Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) enters Saturday's game as a true dual threat in the backfield. He is averaging 66.7 yards per game on the ground and has pulled in 12 catches for 101 more through the air. Flack's 100.3 total offensive yards per game rank him fourth in the PAC.
Â
Waynesburg's four interceptions is good for third in the PAC and is just one pick behind last year's total (5).
Â
Sophomore
Ricco Sastoque (Concord, N.C. / Northwest Cabbarus) has done a fantastic job of solidifying the Yellow Jacket punt game. Since taking over as the everyday punter, he currently ranks second in the PAC in punting average (38.3) with two dropped inside the opposing 20-yard line. As Waynesburg's kicker, he's also knocked down both of his field goal tries, including a PAC-long 42 yarder against Allegheny and averaged 64.8 yards per kickoff with four touchbacks.
