Jersey City, N.J. (Jan. 13) – Saturday was a day to celebrate for the Waynesburg University wrestling team, which traveled to New Jersey City University. The Yellow Jackets won five-of-seven contested bouts, including four with bonus points, to defeat the Gothic Knights 25-17.

The victory was Waynesburg's (1-13) first since Dec. 18, 2021, and ended a 32-match skid in dual competition. It was also the first win under second-year head coach Aaron McKinney.

After neither team weighed in a wrestler at 125 pounds, NJCU (2-12) took a 6-0 lead after a forfeit at 133 pounds. Sophomore JT Hollyfield (Oakdale, Pa. / West Allegheny) tied the score with a pin in 4:06 at 141 pounds.

Freshman Cole Homet (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the day with an 18-2 technical fall (5:10) at 149, but the Knights quickly tied the score with a tech fall of their own at 157. The home team moved back ahead by six with a fall at 165.

Waynesburg would not be denied a long-awaited win, however, as the Orange and Black swept the next three weight classes to lock down the triumph.

Freshman Jacob Wilson (Wills Point, Texas / Princeton) tied the score at 17-17 with a pin in 3:29 at 174 pounds. Freshman Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) put his team back ahead with an 18-1 technical fall (3:26) at 184 pounds to set up a winner-take-all showdown at 197 pounds.

Junior Ayden Bishoff (Kingwood, W.Va. / Preston) was up to the challenge, as he earned an 8-3 decision to clinch the team victory. Neither squad weighed in a heavyweight.

The Jackets return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 20, when they travel to Case Western Reserve to compete in the Dr. Si Ostrach Meet. Wrestling is scheduled to get started at 11 a.m.
