WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan.20) – The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets closed Saturday afternoons Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with the Bethany College Bison on an 11-0 run to seal a come-from-behind 72-69 Alumni Day win at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets (9-8, 6-6) trailed 69-61 following a Bison (7-10, 6-7) layup with 2:11 left in the game.
Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to bring the deficit to 5 at 69-64 with 1:59 to play.
Baker posted his sixth double-double on the year with a game-best 26 points on 11-of-18 from the field and a game-high-tying 12 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end. He added a contest-high-tying three blocks to go with two steals.
Waynesburg set up a full-court press following the Baker free throw, leading to a
Korey Mitchum (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett) steal and fast-break layup with 1:46 left. Mitchum was fouled on the play and converted the free throw to make it a one-score game at 69-67.
After a pair of empty possessions on both sides, Mitchum again picked up a steal and fast-break layup to tie the game at 69. Mitchum posted a game-best three steals on the night along with 7 points.
Bethany had a chance to take the lead with 17 seconds left at the charity stripe but missed the free throw and fouled
Bryson Wilt (Oakland, Md. / Southern Garrett) on the rebound attempt, sending the senior guard to the line on the other end. Wilt hit 1-of-2 giving the Yellow Jackets a 70-69 lead. Wilt had a game-best five assists and 4 points on the night.
A Waynesburg foul with 7 seconds left sent the Bison back to the line for a chance to take the lead, but both free throws clanked off the rim. A pair of
Jake Scheidt (Saxonburg, Pa. / Knoch) free throws with 1.5 seconds left gave the Jackets a 72-69 lead. Bethany's desperation three-quarter-court heave missed the mark, sealing Waynesburg's come-from-behind win.
Scheidt was clutch all night for the Jackets as he posted a season-best 12 points on 6-of-6 from the line and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) added his fourth double-double of the season, and second in as many games, with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds.
Waynesburg honored the 1987-88 NAIA Final Four squad as well as additional alums at halftime of Saturday's contest.
The Yellow Jackets return to the hardwood next Wednesday, Jan. 24, when they travel north on Interstate-79 to Washington & Jefferson for an 8 p.m. showdown.
