WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 6) – For three of the four quarter of Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest between Waynesburg and Chatham, the Yellow Jackets outplayed the Cougars, who rode a 10-game winning streak in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Unfortunately, the PAC leaders put together a monster third quarter that allowed them to leave town with a 58-49 win.
Defense dominated the first half, as Waynesburg (2-11, 1-8) outscored Chatham (12-2, 8-1) 17-15 in the first quarter and 15-9 in the second to build a 32-24 lead. The Orange and Black ended the half with an 11-2 surge.
Momentum took a wild swing to the Cougars' side, as they tallied 21 of the third period's 24 points, all of which came in a massive run that lasted 8:33. The home team shook off the devastating quarter to outscore the visitors 14-13 in the fourth, but it was too little, too late.
Freshman standout
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) posted a solid all-around performance with a game-best 12 rebounds, team-high five assists, two blocks and eight points.
Three Jackets posted double-figure scoring days as senior
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) (13 points), freshman
Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) (11) and sophomore
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) (10) paced the home team. Howard and Friday each posted eight rebounds in the loss.
Though it didn't lead to victory, the Yellow Jackets recorded a plus-18 rebound advantage on the day (51-33).
The Orange and Black return to action on Saturday, Jan. 13, when it travels to Thiel for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Tomcats.
