WAYNESBURG, Pa. (October 19) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team fell in four sets to Chatham in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Homecoming in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday morning.
The defeat drops the Jackets to 4-14 on the year and 0-5 in PAC play. Chatham rises to 8-10, 4-1 PAC.
The Cougars won with a score line of 25-18, 24-26, 25-18 and 28-26. Two of the four sets went to extra points with Chatham escaping a potential winner-take-all fifth set.
The Jackets scored seven-straight points to lead 7-3 and built an 18-14 lead before the Cougars scored the final 11 points of the set to turn an 18-14 deficit into a 25-18 set win.
Waynesburg rallied back after trailing 22-18 in the second set to tie the set at 23. After surviving a Chatham set point, the Jackets scored the final three points to claim the frame 26-24.
The third set saw Waynesburg lead 10-7 before Chatham scored 10 of the next 11 points and established a 19-12 advantage. The Jackets worked back within three (21-18) before Chatham closed the set with four consecutive points.
The Jackets pushed to force a fifth set as they raced out to an 18-9 lead. The Jackets were up 21-13 before a seven-point Chatham string made it 21-20 game. Both teams had opportunities to win the set with three-straight set points being countered with side outs. Chatham notched back-to-back points to clinch the match 28-26.
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) recorded 14 kills, 12 digs and three aces.
Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) added 10 kills.
Madi Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian) and
Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) each chipped in with six kills.
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) recorded 21 assists and 19 digs.
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) picked up 17 digs and three aces.
The Jackets travel to Bethany on Wednesday.
