GREENVILLE, Pa. (October 7) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team was defeated in three sets in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at Thiel on Monday night.
The Tomcats secured the win with set scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-17. Waynesburg falls to 4-10 on the year and 0-2 in PAC play. Thiel rises to 13-3, 1-0 PAC.
The hosts opened the match by scoring the first five points of the opening set.
Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) and
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) recorded kills in a 5-2 spurt that narrowed the Jackets' deficit to 8-6 before Thiel scored six of the next seven points to lead 14-7. Waynesburg worked within four late (18-14) with kills by
Carissa Krall (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop), Zadrozny and
Madi Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian) but the Tomcats closed out the frame 25-18.
The Jackets and Tomcats were tied at two, three, four and five in the second set before Thiel embarked on a 9-1 run and led by at least seven points the rest of the way en route to a 25-12 set victory.
The third set saw Waynesburg lead 8-7 and tie the score at 12 before Thiel went on an 8-1 run and sealed the match with a 25-17 triumph in set three.
Dayton led Waynesburg with seven kills and 14 digs. Zadrozny added five kills.
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) had 12 assists and six digs.
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) added nine assists and seven digs.
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) led Waynesburg with 11 digs.
The Jackets continue PAC play at Geneva on Wednesday.
