Football falls at Geneva in season finale

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (November 16) – The Waynesburg University football team was defeated 33-6 in the Yellow Jackets' regular season finale at Geneva on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams entered the season with identical 4-5 records and identical results against the other nine members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The victory clinches Geneva's first five-win season since 2013 and a sixth-place finish in the conference standings. Waynesburg settles for a 4-6 record, ending the year in seventh in the league standings. The Jackets were picked to finish ninth in the PAC preseason poll.

Waynesburg's lone score of the day came on a 14-yard pass from Thomas Burke III (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) to Dagyn Williams (Leslie, Ark. / Marshall), capping a 10-play, 70-yard drive to make the margin 14-6 Geneva with 9:38 left in the second quarter.

Geneva employed a balanced attack, totaling 336 yards, 172 on the ground and 164 through the air. The Golden Tornadoes had three-straight touchdown scoring drives of at least 50 yards in in the first half to establish a 21-6 halftime lead.

Waynesburg punted on the opening drive of the first half and Geneva took over at the Waynesburg 45. The Golden Tornadoes converted a third-and-five and a fourth-and-seven with first down passes and cashed in with a nine-yard touchdown reception to lead 28-6.

Early in the fourth quarter, a snap out of the end zone on a Waynesburg punt attempt resulted in a safety. The Golden Tornadoes added a short field goal to bring the final margin to 33-6.

The Waynesburg offense was stymied by the Golden Tornadoes as the Jackets were limited to 205 yards of total offense and 10 first downs. The outing was the Jackets' second-lowest in terms of yardage and third-lowest in terms of scoring.

Geneva won the turnover battle 3-1 as the Golden Tornadoes had an interception and recovered two Waynesburg fumbles. Diontae Givens (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Sto-Rox) forced a fumble in the third quarter that was recovered by John Stewart (Lancaster, Pa. / JP McCaskey).

Zayne Cawley (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) rushed for 113 yards on 19 carries to finish with 1,225 rushing yards for the season. He notched his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the campaign. Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) had six catches for 48 yards to lead the Jacket receivers.

Brennan Boron (St. Mary's, W.Va. / St. Marys) set a career high in his final game at Waynesburg with 17 total tackles with half a tackle for loss. Jemuel Cypress (Seat Pleasant, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) added 11 tackles, six solo.

Since Waynesburg's last winning season in 2014, the Jackets have won four games three times, in 2018, 2022 and 2024.
