Women’s Basketball topples Wooster to remain unbeaten

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (November 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team earned a competitive 59-55 victory over Wooster on Monday evening in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg remains unbeaten on the season at 4-0, the best start for the Yellow Jackets since the 2010-11 season. The Fighting Scots fall to 2-2.

Wooster outscored the Jackets 17-10 as the Fighting Scots shot 54.6 percent from the field while the Jackets were just 5-of-23 from the field and 0-for-10 from there.

The Jackets held Wooster to just five points in the second quarter. An 11-0 Waynesburg run turned a 20-14 deficit into a 25-20 lead. Waynesburg carried a 27-22 advantage into halftime.

The Jacket advantage stretched to as many as 11 points in the third quarter before Wooster narrowed the margin to 43-39 heading into the fourth.

The game was within two possessions the entire fourth quarter as Wooster cut the Waynesburg lead ot a single point twice in the last five minutes. Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) sank a jumper and Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) put in a basket after three Waynesburg offensive rebounds following the Scots getting back within one. 

Wooster drained a three to make the margin 55-53 with under a minute left. Jaden Sturm (Clarksburg, W.Va. / Robert C. Byrd) scored after an offensive rebound by Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) to put the Jackets back up four. McFadden sank two free throws in the waning seconds to bring the score to its final tally of 59-55.

Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) had a career-high 18 points on 9-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds. McFadden added 15 points and two steals. Friday finished with nine points and five assists. Mohrbacher led Waynesburg on the glass with 15 rebounds and five steals.

The Jackets were plus-10 in the turnover margin (24-14) and had 16 steals on the night. Waynesburg pulled out the win despite shooting 2-for-24 from three, after making at least nine threes in each of its first three games.

Waynesburg opens conference play on Wednesday at Grove City.
