Women’s Soccer season ends in PAC quarterfinals at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. (November 2) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team had its season ended in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament quarterfinals as the Jackets fell at third-seeded Allegheny 3-1.

Waynesburg concludes its season at 8-5-4 while Allegheny rises to 12-6-1 and moves on to face No. 2 seed Grove City on Wednesday.

Allegheny's Emma Miller entered the matchup as the most prolific scorer in the PAC with 24 goals in 18 regular season games. She scored both of the Gators' first two goals and added an assist in the final minutes.

Waynesburg earned back-to-back corner kicks in the 15th and 16th minutes but were unable to generate a shot. Allegheny quickly cleared the ball after the second corner kick, went the length of the field and scored a counterattack goal Miller providing the finish.

Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) stole the ball on Allegheny's side of the field, dribbled into the box and fired a left-footed shot from inside 10 yards that was saved in the 24th minute. Allegheny nearly doubled its lead four minutes later with Miller blasting a shot just wide of the goal frame.

Pepe found Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) at the top of the penalty area with a pass in the 35th minute and Mohrbacher stepped into a shot right at the Allegheny keeper.

The Gators nearly added a goal in the final minute of the first half. Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) made a reaction save on a header after a late corner kick. Allegheny collected the ball and had its follow-up attempt sail just over the crossbar with 44 seconds left in the half.

Allegheny continued to press for a second goal in early stages of the second half. Miller attempted three shots in less than a minute with the final shot being saved by Greenlief in the 59th minute.

Brooklyn Loveland (New Cumberland, W. Va. / Oak Glen) lofted a ball into the six-yard box that was not initially handled by the Gators' goalie but she quickly recovered to prevent a scoring opportunity.

The Gators added another goal in the 71st minute as Miller found an opening in the penalty area, received a pass, advanced with a touch and finished in the lower-right corner to put Allegheny up 2-0.

Waynesburg went on the offensive, taking four shots in the five minutes following Allegheny's second goal. Demaree Livingston (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Dublin) had a wide-angled shot saved and Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) fired a long-range shot that was snatched out of the air.

Mohrbacher finally broke through for Waynesburg in the 85th minute. Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) entered the top-left of the 18-yard box and centered a pass to Mohrbacher. Mohrbacher spun and took a slow-arcing shot that attempt that bounced once before tricking in off the hands of the goalie.

The Jackets were not able to attempt a game-tying shot before Allegheny scored in the 88th minute. Miller served a corner kick to the top of the six-yard box where Allegheny's Katherine Surdykowski tucked a leaping header inside the right post.

Allegheny owned a 28-19 edge in shots (12-8 SOG) and had six of the game's eight corner kicks.

Waynesburg finished with a winning record for the second-straight season, the first time the program has done so since 2011.
