WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (November 2) – The Waynesburg University men's wrestling team began its 2024-25 campaign at the Ned McGinley Invitational, hosted by King's College.
Waynesburg finished 13th of the 15 teams the event with a total of 30.5 points.
Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) secured the top finish for the Yellow Jackets as he finished fourth in the 184 pound weight class. Orbin secured a major decision in his first bound and notched a pin in less than a minute to advance to the quarterfinals. A medical forfeit sent Orbin to the semifinals, where he was defeated 14-3 by the eventual 184 champion Trent Furman of NYU. He was defeated 10-5 in the third place match to take fourth.
Seth Evans (Sharon, Pa. / Sharon) won three matches to reach the quarterfinals before running into the eventual champion at 157 pounds. He notched a 5-0 decision, a 17-1 technical fall and an 11-8 decision to reach a matchup with top overall seed Cooper Pontelandolfo of NYU. Pontelandolfo sent Evans to the consolation bracket, where he was a 15-3 major decision victory before stalling out a match before the fifth place bout.
Jacob Wilson (Wills Point, Texas / Princeton) at 174 and
Ayden Bishoff (Kingwood, W.Va. / Preston) at 197 each won two matches, one in the championship bracket and one in the consolation bracket.
AJ Tomaino (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) went 1-2 at 165 pounds, picking up his first win as a Jacket by way of a third period fall.
The Jackets head to the W&J Invitational next Saturday.
