Men’s Basketball opens 2024-25 season at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (November 9) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team opened its 2024-25 campaign at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon. The Jackets led by five at the half but a second half charge by the Mustangs resulted in a 73-62 victory for Stevenson.

A pair of three-pointers by Grant Barnhart (St. Mary's, W.Va. / St. Mary's) gave the Yellow Jackets a 16-15 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. The teams traded the lead back-and-forth down the stretch before Waynesburg outscored Stevenson 9-0 over the final four minutes of the half to carry a 28-23 lead into the break.

The Mustangs scored on seven of their first eight possessions to begins the second half and lead 37-32. Jalen Goins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) knotted the score at 37 with a trey with 14:21 remaining. Stevenson scored the next seven points to go ahead 44-37.

Barnhart canned back-to-back three-pointers to cut the margin to three (46-43) with just under 10 minutes remaining. Stevenson went on a 7-0 run to establish its first double-digit lead of the day (53-43) with seven minutes to go as the Jackets were only able to trim the margin to eight the rest of the way.

Waynesburg shot 10-of-19 from three and scored 31 bench points. The Jackets' top two scorers in the ballgame came off the bench with Barnhart and Scott Bilovus (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) each finishing with 14 points and four made three-pointers each. PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) chipped in with a dozen points.

The Jackets finished plus-10 in the turnover margin (22-12) and recorded seven steals.

Waynesburg travels to Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
