WAYNESBURG, Pa. (December 7) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team kept pace with Allegheny in the first half before the Gators pulled away for an 87-59 victory in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
Waynesburg falls to 4-5 on the season and 0-5 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Allegheny rises to 4-4 on the season and remains undefeated in PAC action at 4-0.
The Yellow Jackets made five of their first seven field goal attempts with
Mia Henkins' (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) trey giving Waynesburg an 11-6 lead with 6:25 left in the quarter. The Gators worked back within two (18-17) late in the quarter but
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) converted a pair of baskets in the final 30 seconds to give Waynesburg a 24-17 edge at the end of the first period.
Allegheny scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to lead 29-24. Waynesburg used three-pointers by
Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) and
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) to tie the game at 34 with 2:57 left in the half. Friday scored the Jackets' final five points of the quarter as the two teams went into halftime knotted at 41.
The Gators outscored Waynesburg 22-8 in the third quarter. Allegheny started the quarter on a 9-2 sport and closed the frame with an 11-0 run to lead 63-49 going into the fourth.
The Jackets cut the deficit to eight (65-67) two minutes into the fourth quarter before Allegheny put the game out of reach with a 16-0 string as the Gators remained unblemished in league play.
Friday led the Jackets with 18 points and four rebounds.
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Allegheny's Bella Antonacci had a game-high 32 points to pace the Gators.
The ballgame featured seven ties and five lead changes before Allegheny pulled away in the second half.
The Jackets take on Westminster on Dec. 16.
