STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Feb. 14) -- The Waynesburg University men's basketball team clinched the number-four seed and a home quarterfinal game in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament with Wednesday night's 84-80 win over Franciscan University at Finnegan Fieldhouse in a conference showdown.
A pair of
Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) free throws gave the Yellow Jackets (13-11, 10-9) a 75-71 lead with 3:59 left. The Barons (8-15, 5-14) comprised a 5-0 run thanks to five Sawyer Butler free throws to claim a 76-75 lead with 1:51 remaining.
After corralling an offensive rebound,
Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) was fouled and sent to the line. He connected on both free throws to put the visitors back up 77-76 with 1:27 left.
Davis picked up a key block on the ensuing Barons possession. On the offensive end, he converted an old-fashioned 3-point play off of a
Korey Mitchum (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett) assist to put the Orange and Black up 80-76 with 45 seconds left.
Butler hit a jumper with 30 seconds left to make it 80-78. Looking to extend the game, Franciscan fouled
Ryan Felberg (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg), sending him to the line. Felberg went 1-of-2 and the Barons responded with another basket to make it 81-80 with 13 seconds left.
Felberg was fouled on the following possession and he again went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe. The Barons' last second left-corner 3-pointer came up short and Mitchum came down with the rebound and was immediately fouled. His two free throws with 0.5 seconds left sealed the Jackets' 84-80 win.
Felberg finished with 4 points, all of which came at the line. The Jackets set season highs in free-throw makes (31) and free-throw attempts (38).
Davis posted a team-leading and season-high 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 11-of-15 at the line. He added a game-best 14 rebounds to go with a season-best and game-high-tying four blocks in the win.
Mitchum notched his strongest performance as a Yellow Jacket with season highs in points (19), made field goals (six), attempted field goals (nine), free-throw makes (6-of-6) and minutes (31). He added a game-high four assists and contest-high-tying two steals.
The Jackets led 66-57 at the 9:51 mark of the second half after a Baker jumper. The Barons responded with an 8-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 3 with 6:19 left.
Baker finished with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half, on 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-3 at the line. He pulled down five boards and tied for the game high with two steals.
The Jackets closed the first half on a 5-0 run in the final 35 seconds as Davis hit a jumper and
