Jackets close 2024 season with pair of impressive wins

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 17) -- In their final game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse, Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) and Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) led the Waynesburg University women's basketball team to a dominant 91-53 win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Thiel College in the season finale on Saturday afternoon.

From the start, the Yellow Jackets (6-19, 5-15) imposed their will on the winless Tomcats (0-25, 0-20) as Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) and Dansby got the home side off to an 8-0 start 1:33 into the game. A Thiel layup at the 7:57 mark spearheaded an 8-2 run for the visitors that cut the Jackets' lead to 10-8 with 6:39 left in the opening quarter.

The Yellow Jackets responded with a 14-0 run to lead 24-8 just past the halfway point of period one. In that stretch, Dansby had a pair of 3-pointers, Wolf had 5 points and Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) had 3 points.

Dansby finished her final game as a Jacket with a career-best 22 points on 9-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. She added a game-high-tying three steals to go with four rebounds in the winning effort.

Wolf ended her career with a season-best 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-7 from deep, along with two rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Howard notched all of her points in the Jackets' 14-0 run and finished with a game-high-tying and career-best five assists.

Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian) scored the Jackets' final 6 points of the opening quarter to give Waynesburg a 30-13 advantage after 10 minutes. Dayton finished with 8 points on 4-of-6 and nine rebounds.

The Orange and Black shot 50.0% (20 for 40) from the field and 42.9% (9 for 21) from 3-point range in the first half to lead 50-25 at the break. The Yellow Jackets led 70-36 after 30 minutes and grew their lead as high as 43 points (91-48) on a Wolf jumper with 1:33 left to play.

Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) capped her stellar freshman campaign with an 8-point, 10-rebound showing. Fellow freshman Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) whipped in 9 points on 3-of-7 from deep. Friday pitched in 6 points to go with four boards.
