WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 20) -- The Wayensburg University men's basketball team's season came to an end Tuesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse as Grove City topped the Orange and Black 65-58 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament quarterfinals.
The Wolverines (14-12, 9-11) held a 52-39 lead with 4:30 left in the game. The Yellow Jackets (14-12, 11-9) began chipping away at the lead, putting together a mini 4-0 run as
Jordan McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn. / Science Hill) hit a pair of free throws and
Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) added a fast-break layup off of a McLoyd assist to make it 52-43 with 3:18 left.
McLoyd posted a contest- and season-best 24 points on 7-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-11 from deep, and 7-of-7 at the line. He added six rebounds and three assists in the loss.
The visitors hit a free throw with 2:50 left to push their lead back to double-digits (53-43). A
Korey Mitchum (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett) 3-pointer on the following possession made it a 53-46 game. Mitchum picked up a steal in the full-court press on the following play and dished it to Baker, who converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 53-49 with 2:23 left.
Baker finished with 20 points on 9-of-18 and 2-of-3 at the line to go with a game-high-tying nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.
Grove City added a jumper on the following possession to make it a 6-point game with 1:59 left. Mitchum nailed a jumper in the paint with 1:31 remaining to trim the deficit to 55-51. The Jackets had a pair of chances to make it a one-score game on their next two possessions but were unable to find the basket as
Jake Scheidt (Saxonburg, Pa. / Knoch) missed a left-corner 3-pointer and Mitchum missed a contested layup attempt.
The Jackets were unable to get into a groove offensively as the Wolverines stymied the Jackets' typically dominant inside presence, forcing the Jackets into tying their season high in 3-point attempts with 24 on the night. As a team, the home side went 4-of-24 (16.7%) from beyond the arc, which was their second lowest shooting percentage from deep on the year.
The Wolverines outscored the Jackets 10-8 over the final 40 seconds to seal the victory and spoil the home sides comeback attempt to advance to the PAC semifinals.
Waynesburg went 9-of-28 (32.1%) from the field and 1-of-10 (10%) from deep in the first half to trail 30-23 at the break. For the game, the Yellow Jackets went 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the field.
Jansen Knotts (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Frankfort) posted a game- and season-best four steals to go with 4 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Bryson Wilt (Oakland, Md. / Southern Garrett) had a game-high four assists.
