WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 13) -- The Waynesburg University baseball team split a doubleheader with Hilbert College Wednesday afternoon at the Baseball & Softball Complex. Hilbert took game one 4-1, and Waynesburg came away with a 7-3 victory in game two.
Game One
Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) got the nod in game one for the Yellow Jackets (5-4, 0-0 PAC) and limited the Hawks (9-3, 0-0 AMCC) to just one base runner through two innings. The visitors put runners on first and second with nobody out in the third, but Erhard worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a fielders choice.
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) beat out an infield single in the third to put runners at first and second with nobody out, but the Jackets were unable to get on the board. Bell became the 27th player in program history to record 100 hits with his base knock.Â
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) relieved Erhard in the fourth and worked a pair of scoreless frames.
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) relieved Williams in the sixth after he allowed a single and a walk to start the inning. The Hawks got on the board first, scoring on an error and then adding 2 more later in the inning on a single to make it 3-0.
Hilbert added a run in the seventh to lead 4-0. The Jackets made a late comeback push as
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) had a two-out single and advanced to second on an error.
Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) drove him in with a RBI single but the Orange and Black were unable to add any more to spell the 4-1 final.Â
Game Two
The Hawks (9-4, 0-0 AMCC) put runners on first and second to start the game with a walk and a single. The Yellow Jackets' (6-4, 0-0 PAC) defense was on full display in the first inning as the final two outs came on a pick off at second and a caught stealing.
Waynesburg used their momentum from the top of the inning to get on the board first in the bottom half as Bell drove in
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) on a single to make it 1-0.Â
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) brought in Hamilton with an RBI single in in the second to give the home side a 2-0 lead. The Hawks cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third with a run-scoring single.
Zach Scibelli (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) kept the lead with Waynesburg as he stranded runners on the corners with one out in the fourth.Â
The Jackets loaded the bases with a trio fo walks in the fifth.
Connor Hamrick (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) worked a full-count walk to bring in Bell, making it 3-1. Hamilton delivered his third RBI of the day with a two-run single to extend the Jackets lead to 5-1.
Bell was called on in relief in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out. He limited the damage to 2 as the Hawks made it 5-3. The Orange and Black responded in the sixth as Bell produced an RBI double, and he later scored on a Giraffa single to make it 7-3.Â
Bell worked around a lead-off walk and a two-out single to get the save and seal the Jackets' victory.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday when they open PAC play with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader versus Geneva.
