Bats erupt late as Jackets down Davis & Elkins 10-2

Yellow Jackets continue hot start to 2024

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University baseball team, behind a late-game 9-run spurt, downed Davis & Elkins College 10-2 Monday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Senators (0-8, 0-0 MEC) capitalized on a pair of early errors to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With runners on the corners. Dalton Lucey (Holmbrook, Pa. / West Greene) escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play.

The Yellow Jackets' (4-0, 0-0 PAC) tied things in the third as Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) came home an error.

Lucey settled in to a groove after the first, allowing just two hits over the next six innings. In that stretch, he retired the Senators in order each inning except for the fourth.

The Jackets' bats came to life in the seventh as Seth Burdgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) knocked in Garrett Comer (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) with a single. Jordan Mosely (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) kept the inning going for the Orange and Black with a 2-run double to make it 4-1. Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) brought Bell home with a sacrifice fly to give the Jackets a 5-1 lead heading into the stretch.

After Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) and Comer drew walks to start the eighth, Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) brought home Giraffa with a run-scoring single to make it 6-1. With the bases loaded, Bell was hit by a pitch to bring Comer around, making it 7-1.

The onslaught continued as Mosely extended the lead to 9-1 with a two-RBI single to score Burgdolt and Mount. Williams knocked in Bell on a groundout to make it 10-1. The Senators added a run in the ninth to spell the 10-2 final.

Lucey got his first win of 2024 by going seven innings, allowing just three hits and 0 earned runs while striking out seven with no walks.

Mosely went 2-for-2 with a career-best four RBIs. Mount finished 2-for-5 with 3 runs scored and an RBI while Burgdolt added a 2-for-5 effort with a pair of runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Williams finished with 2 RBIs, and Bell knocked in a run and scored twice.
