Softball trades one-run wins with Bethany

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 15) – The Waynesburg University softball team traded a pair of one-run wins with Bethany in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on Monday afternoon. The Bison were 3-2 winners in extra innings in game one before the Jackets battled back to a 6-5 victory in game two.

The Jackets move to 16-11 on the season and 7-5 in PAC play. Bethany sits at 22-7, 8-6 PAC.

Game 1 – Bethany 3, Waynesburg 2 (8 innings)

Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run down the left-field line in the fourth. The Bison struck back with a two-run single in the top of the fifth. The Bison threatened to take the lead with runners and second with one out before Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) tagged a runner out and threw to first to end the threat with a double play.

Waynesburg starter Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) stranded a pair of Bison to preserve the tie score in the sixth. 

Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) led off the seventh with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next o batters grounded out and went down swinging to send the game into extra innings.

Bethany broke through with a two-out double to the right field wall to bring home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth. 

The Jackets put the tying run on with a leadoff walk but pinch runner Mackenzie Kearns (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the ballgame.

The Jackets scattered four hits in the game with Rice's long ball providing both runs. 

Wilson was tagged with the extra-inning loss. She allowed three runs, two earned, while striking out three. 

Game 2 – Waynesburg 6, Bethany 5

Bethany took a 3-0 lead in game two. The Bison scored an unearned run in the second and tallied two more with a sacrifice fly and RBI double in the third.

Waynesburg struck back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Trinity Edge (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin) drove in a run with a base hit and Sydney Waryanka (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) scampered home on a wild pitch.

The Jackets knocked three consecutive two-out hits to bring home four runs and take a 6-3 lead in the fourth. Edge brought in a run with a sharply-hit ball to third, Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) drove in a pair with a double to left-center and Trimble continued the rally with a base hit to right center. When the dust settled the Jackets scored four runs, all with two outs, in the inning.

Bethany made it a one-run ballgame with a two-run homer in the sixth. Wilson retired the Bison in order in the seventh to pick up her second save of the season. 

Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) earned the win after allowing five runs, three earned, in six innings of work with three strikeouts.

Higgins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Edge had two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Jagielski double, drove in two and scored once.

The Jackets host Grove City in their annual "Angels in the Outfield" suicide awareness games on Thursday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
