PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team earned a 13-2 run-rule victory over Chatham on Friday evening in Pittsburgh.
The Jackets rise to 11-10 on the year and 4-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Chatham falls to 7-11, 0-3 PAC. The game marked the start of a stretch of seven conference games in six days for the Jackets after numerous weather-related postponements. Waynesburg and the Cougars will conclude their season series on April 21 at the WVU's Kendrick Family Ballpark at 2:00 p.m.
Waynesburg used a four-run third inning to hand starting pitcher
Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) an early lead.
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) walked to lead off the fourth and scored on a groundout.
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) knocked a two-out RBI single and
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) drove in two more runs with a base knock to give the Jackets a 4-0 edge.
Chatham scratch across an unearned run in the fourth but Waynesburg struck back with two runs of its own in the fifth. The Jackets used two walks and a single to load the bases.
Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) singled to shortstop to plate Mount and Engelmore walked with the bases loaded to score Burner.
The Jacket lead grew to 7-1 in the sixth.
Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) ripped a one-out triple and Burner provided another two-out RBI with a base hit. Waynesburg's lead swelled to 10-1 after the seventh with two unearned runs and an RBI single by
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic).
Engelmore had an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on a single off the bat of
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler). Williams scored on a groundout to grow the Jackets' lead to 13-1.
The Cougars tacked on another unearned run in the eighth but could not prevent a run-rule victory.
Nine different players scored and seven Jackets drove in at least one run in the ballgame. Waynesburg posted 13 hits and nine walks on their way to a season-high 13 runs.
Burner went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Engelmore was 2-for-3 with a triple, four RBI, two walks and two runs scored.
Lucey earned a complete game win. He limited the Cougars to two unearned runs on one hit with three strikeouts and seven walks in the contest.
Waynesburg squares off with Bethany in a PAC doubleheader at Dale Miller Field in Morgantown at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
