WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 7) – The Waynesburg University softball team clubbed six home runs and tallied 22 runs in a pair of five inning, run-rule win's over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Franciscan University Sunday afternoon at the Baseball & Softball Complex.
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) tossed a five-inning no-hitter in game two, and
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) became the third pitcher in program history to record 300 career strikeouts in game one.
The Jackets improve to 14-5 (5-1 PAC) while the Barons fall to 1-17 (0-8 PAC).
Game 1 – Waynesburg 10, Franciscan 1
The Yellow Jackets attacked starter Carissa Cedillo early as
Sydney Waryanka (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) clubbed her first homer of the day, a 2-run shot, to left field to make it 2-0 in the first. After an
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) double in the next at bat,
Trinity Edge (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin) raked another 2-run homer to left to make it 4-0. The Jackets added a fifth run in the first on an error.
Waynesburg tacked on another run in the third on a
Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) RBI single. Later in the inning, Waryanka came to the dish with the bases loaded and smacked her second homer of the day, a grand slam to left, to make it 10-0.
The Barons notched a run in the fourth to make it 10-1, but it was all Wilson in the circle for the Orange and Black as the junior southpaw struck out nine to become the third player in program history to reach the 300-career strikeout mark.
Wilson improves to 7-0 on the year and is currently first in the PAC and 17th in Division III with a 0.71 ERA.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 11, Franciscan 0
Stemple got the start in game two and twirled her second career no-hitter. Her first came in the
PAC Tournament last year versus Allegheny, a 1-0 Waynesburg win. She finished the day with three strikeouts and held the Barons to weak contact all afternoon as she improved to 5-2 on the year.
Edge knocked a run-scoring double in the first to make it 1-0. Leading 2-0 in the second, Waryanka drilled her third homer of the day and second grand slam of the afternoon to left, making it 6-0.
The Jackets tacked on 5 more runs in the fourth as
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) hit her first homer of the year, and
Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) clubbed her third Orange-and-Black home run to make it 11-0.
Stemple
finished the no-no off with a trio of ground-ball outs in the fifth to seal Waynesburg's seventh straight victory.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Tuesday when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for a 3:30 p.m. PAC doubleheader.
