NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (May 3) – The Waynesburg University softball team was defeated 7-4 by top-seeded Westminster in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) winners bracket final on Friday afternoon.
Waynesburg falls to 21-17 on the season while Westminster rises to 23-11 and advances to the conference championship game.
The Jackets return to action tomorrow in the elimination bracket final at 11 a.m. against he winner of Grove City and Allegheny. The winner of that game will take on Westminster, needing two victories against the Titans to claim the PAC title.
Westminster used a five-run third inning to break a 2-2 tie. The score remained 7-2 until the seventh inning as the Titans snapped Waynesburg's eight game PAC Tournament win streak.
The hosts used four first inning hits to take a 2-0 lead. The Jackets rallied back to tie the game with a run in the second and third innings.
Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) knocked an RBI double in the second and
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) did the same in the third. Both runners ended up stranded on second.
Westminster's first four batters reached safely in the third inning. The Titans led 5-2 before a pair of two-out hits grew their advantage to 7-2.
Waynesburg was held off the scoreboard until the seventh.
Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) knocked a two-out, two run single to cut the margin to 7-4. A walk loaded the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Pinch hitter
Jasmine Demaske's (Waynesburg, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) line drive was snagged by second baseman to end the ballgame.
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan), Brookman and Bliss each had tow hits in the contest. Higgins scored twice. Brookman, Bliss and
Bella DeMark each double and Rice drove in two runs.
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) took the setback after surrendering seven runs in there innings.
Trinity Edge (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin) did not allow a hit or run in three innings of relief.
The Jackets will need to win three games on PAC championship Saturday to claim a third-straight conference title. Waynesburg squares off with the winner of Grove City and Allegheny tomorrow at 11 a.m.
