Baseball drops PAC Tournament opener to Allegheny

WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 8) – The Waynesburg University baseball dropped its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament opener against Allegheny 4-2 on Wednesday evening at W&J's Ross Memorial Park.

Waynesburg falls to 23-18 on the season while Allegheny rises to 26-13.

The game was scoreless through the first five innings. The Waynesburg defense showed early in the ballgame with a baserunner caught stealing to end the top of the first inning and a double play to close the second.

Allegheny used a pair of doubles and to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

Marcos Mendez (Ponce, Puerto Rico / Westminster (Md.)) tied the game with a two-run book rule double in the home half of the sixth to score Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) and Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough).

Allegheny went ahead again with an RBI double in the eighth. Two hit batsman and a walk brought home another run to give the Gators a 4-2 edge.

The Jackets put runners on first and second with one in the eighth but a double play ended the inning.

Waynesburg went down in order in the ninth as Alleghany took the 4-2 victory.

Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs in 7.1 innings. He did not surrender a run in five of the first six innings and struck out six. Matthew Corte-Gaskill Wake Forest, N.C. / Knightdale) posted a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief.

Mendez had two of Waynesburg's five hits and both of the Jackets' RBI with his double. 

Waynesburg squares off with top-seeded W&J tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The Presidents defeated Thiel 6-5 with a walk-off in the tournament's opening game.
