ON WAYNESBURGÂ
A fourth quarter goal line stand gave the Jackets the ball down 17-10 with 14:06 left to play last week at Westminster. After three first downs, the Jackets' second lost fumble of the day gave possession back to the Titans, who scored five plays later to bring the margin to its final tally of 23-10. The Jackets had a 23-22 edge in first downs and rushed for 5.0 yards per carry. In three red zone trips, Waynesburg came away with 10 points (TD, fumble, FG) and Westminster had both of the game's takeaways. Â
ON W&J
With 16 touchdowns in two games, W&J enters week three as the No. 3 scoring offense in NCAA Division III with 58.5 points per game. The Presidents lead the nation with 64 first downs and own a top-10 scoring defense (3.5) and total defense (123.5). W&J is one of four PAC schools to be listed in the D3football.com Top 25 poll this week as the Presidents are receiving votes in the national poll. W&J has had a pair of fast starts as the Presidents  led Saint Vincent 49-0 at halftime and outscored Thiel 34-0 in the first half in weeks one and two.
THE SERIES (W&J LEADS 47-4)
The PAC Backyard Brawl will be played in September for the first time since 1991. In last year's matchup, the Jackets posted their highest-scoring outing against the Presidents since knocking off W&J in 2014 (31-28 OT). The 2023 edition of the PAC Backyard Brawl was a tale of two halves as the Presidents led the Jackets 33-7 after two quarters before Waynesburg outscored W&J 21-0 in the second half. The Jackets recovered three W&J fumbles, blocked a punt and made a pair of fourth down stops in Waynesburg territory in the second half to give the Jacket comeback a chance. The Jacket defense logged a season-high three red zone stops with two fumbles and one turnover on downs. Entering the matchup, W&J had shut out the Jackets in the previous three meetings.
BLOCK PARTY IN WAYNESBURG
Waynesburg has a blocked PAT in each of its first two matchups to open the 2024 season, with defensive linemen
Virgil Doiron and
Alex Paulsen each recording a block. The Jackets rank second in the conference as well as sixth nationally in blocked kicks.
ZAYNE FOR ANOTHER GAIN
Junior
Zayne Cawley enters week three as the Presidents' Athletic Conference's leading rusher with 154 rushing yards. He ran for a conference season-best 129 yards and a score last week against Westminster.
