Football contends with W&J and weather delay

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 21) – The Waynesburg University football team had to contend with Washington & Jefferson and a lengthy weather delay as the Jackets fell to the Presidents 55-16 at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg falls to 0-3 on the year and in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. W&J, who received votes in the latest D3football.com top 25 poll, moves to 3-0, 3-0 PAC. The matchup marked the first time the Jackets and Presidents squared off in September since the 1991 season.

With the Jackets facing a third-and-six from the W&J 16 late in the first half, thunder and lightning triggered an automatic weather delay. The delay last two-and-a-half hours before the teams were able to take the field to play out the final 90 seconds of the first half.

Trailing 28-6, the Jackets were sacked on their first snap after the delay and Drew Pinkerton (Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg) knocked a 39-yard field goal through the uprights to make it a 28-9 ballgame.

The Presidents drove inside the Waynesburg 10-yard line in the final seconds of the half before Quilik Wooten (Landover, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) intercepted a Jacob Pugh pass in the end zone to prevent the Presidents from notching a quick score.

Waynesburg's first touchdown of the day was also set up by an interception as Raymond Davis III (Palatka, Fla. / Crescent City) stepped in front of a W&J pass and raced 47 yards down the right sideline to give the Jackets possession at the W&J 19. Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) had a catch-and-run to the W&J one yard-line and Carson Shriver (Fairview, W. Va. / Clay-Battelle) punched in Waynesburg's first touchdown of the day to make the score 14-6 Presidents.

W&J scored two more second quarter touchdowns before the Jackets took over with 7:21 left in the half and began their march into the W&J red zone before the weather delay.

The Presidents scored three touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth. Waynesburg scored the final touchdown of the ballgame with Thomas Burke III (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) connecting with Isaac Trout in the end zone from 11 yards out to bring the final margin to 55-16.

Samuel Barber (Johnstown, Pa. / Greater Johnstown) completed nine-of-13 passes for 111 yards. Burke completed one pass for six yards and the fourth quarter score. Trout caught five passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Zayne Cawley (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) rushed for 78 yards on 19 carries. Joshua Jefferson (Capitol Heights, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) had 40 yards on seven carries, all in the fourth quarter.

Dacious Passmore (Ocala, Fla. / Forest) led the Jackets with eight tackles and added a pass break up. Wooten and Davis had interceptions on the day.

Waynesburg travels to Saint Vincent next Saturday.
