Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 24) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team battled for over three hours and fell 4-3 in narrow defeat to Carlow at Alpha Tennis and Fitness in Pittsburgh.
The Jackets move to 1-5 on the season while Carlow rises to 1-4. Last spring, the Celtics took an 8-1 decision over the Jackets in the 2023-24 season finale.
Waynesburg took the doubles point with second and third doubles pulling out competitive victories.
Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) and
Karly Starcher (Williamston, W. Va. / St. Mary's) won 7-5 at No. 2 doubles while
Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) and
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) were 6-4 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Corey collected a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles and Bailey was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at fifth singles.
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) won a tiebreaker to take the first set but fell 6-7, 6-3, 10-6 in a super tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. Burns and Starcher each won five games in their singles matches as the Jackets were not shut out in any set, but Carlow squeaked out the win by a single point.
The Jackets travel to Westminster for a Presidents' Athletic Conference match on Thursday.
