WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 25) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team defeated Pitt-Greensburg in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
The Jackets remain unbeaten at home this season and move to 3-7 overall. The Bobcats fall to 1-14. Waynesburg won with a winning score line of 25-17, 17-25, 25-18 and 25-21.
Waynesburg set season-highs with eight total blocks and 48 assists in the contest. The Jackets logged double-digit kills in all four sets and hit .209 for the match.
The Jackets used a 10-2 run to build a 15-7 lead in the opening set. UPG narrowed the margin to four (15-11) before Waynesburg answered with six of the next seven points to lead 21-12 and won the set by eight points.
UPG never trailed in the second set and evened the match at one with a 25-17 effort in set two.
The Bobcats scored the first four points of the second set but the Jackets responded with a 10-1 run with seven points coming via Jacket kill or block. Waynesburg led by at least four points the rest of the way to go ahead 2-1 with a 25-18 final set score.
The fourth set went back and fourth with UPG leading 10-6 before Waynesburg tied the match at 10. The Bobcats led 12-10 before the Jackets scored the next seven points and led the rest of the match. UPG survived one match point before Waynesburg sealed the set with a 25-21 final tally.
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) matched a season high with 15 kills on 31 swings with no errors for a .484 hitting percentage. She added four blocks, one solo.
Madi Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian) notched nine kills, eight digs and four total blocks.
Carissa Krall (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) and
Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) added seven kills apiece.
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) recorded 26 assists, seven digs and four kills.
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) had 16 assists and eight digs.
Jordan Stein had 27 digs on the night.
Waynesburg heads to Mount Aloysius for a tri-match with the Mounties and La Roche on Saturday.
