Volleyball travels to Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio (September 4) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team fell in three sets at Muskingum in a nonconference matchup in Ohio on Wednesday evening. 

The Jackets fall to 0-5 on the season while the Muskies rise to 4-1. Muskingum took the match with set scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-21.

Waynesburg hung with the Muskies over the first 15 points of the opening set as the frame was tied at five and the Jackets were within two (9-7) before the hosts scored eight-straight points as part of an 11-3 run to seize control of the first set. Waynesburg responded with a 6-2 spurt with two kills by Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) before Muskingum closed out the first set.

 The Jackets hung close throughout the second set, never trailing by more than four points. Waynesburg worked back from a 10-6 margin to tie the set at 14 after a kill by Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) and an ace from Krista Wilson (Greensboro, Pa. / Mapletown). Muskingum pushed ahead 21-17 and Waynesburg scored the next three points to work back to a 21-20 score before the Muskies reeled off the next four points to win the set.

Waynesburg took its latest lead in any set as the Jackets used a 4-0 run to hold an 8-5 advantage in the third set. Muskingum answered by scoring the next six points and led the rest of the way. The Jackets narrowed the margin to 22-20 late before the Muskies clinched the match with a 25-21 margin.

Zadrozny led the way with seven kills, followed by Wilson with six.

Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) notched 18 digs and Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) had 15 assists.

The Jackets host defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Bethany in their home opener next Thursday.
