WHEELING, W.Va. (January 10) – The Waynesburg University men's wrestling team earned its first win of the season as the Jackets defeated Muskingum 33-10 in a tri meet at Wheeling on Friday night. The Jackets nearly secured a second victory but fell 26-22 against the host Cardinals in the nightcap.
Waynesburg moves to 1-9 on the season in dual action.
Seth Evans (Sharon, Pa. / Sharon) went 2-0 on the day at with an 11-4 decision at 157 pounds against Muskingum and a 10-2 major decision at 165 pounds verses Wheeling.
In the match against the Muskies, neither team put forward a wrestler at 125 or 133 pounds. Waynesburg collected forfeit wins at 141, 165, 174, 184 and 197. Evans was triumphant at 157 by decision.
Against Wheeling, an NCAA Division II opponent, the Jackets notched three bonus point wins plus a forfeit at 184.
Brayden Barbao (Donora, Pa. / Ringgold) notched a first period fall at 141 pounds, Evans took a major decision and Jesse Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) secured a pin in the final seconds of the second period at 197 pounds.
With forfeits, Barbao, Orbin and Javis Thomas (Rex, Ga. / Mount Zion) each went 2-0 with forfeits.
Wheeling edged the Jackets with a victory by fall in the final match of the day to secure the dual victory.
Waynesburg dual match with Garrett College has been rescheduled to Sunday. The Jackets will take on Garrett, Bergen Community College and Jamestown Community College in a quad meet, starting at 11 a.m.
