WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team outscored Grove City 11-2 over the final 91 seconds of regulation to score a 70-61 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over the Wolverines in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
Waynesburg moves to 8-7 on the season and 3-7 in PAC play, avenging a November defeat to the Wolverines in Grove City. Grove City falls to 8-7, 6-4 PAC. The triumph is Waynesburg's first win over a top-half opponent in the PAC standings this season.
The game featured 10 ties, the final occurring with the two teams deadlocked at 59 with 1:45 remaining.
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) scored through contact on an inbound play and converted the ensuing foul shot to put the Jackets ahead 62-59. Miller grabbed the rebound on Grove City's following possession, was fouled and sank two more free throws. She added an additional two foul shots as the Jackets went 6-for-6 from the foul line over the final 27 seconds to seal the win.
Grove City led 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter but baskets apiece by
Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) and
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) gave the Jackets a 53-50 edge with 6:22 remaining. Grove City clawed back to tie the game at 57 and 59 before Miller's late-game heroics.
The game was tied at 19 after the first quarter and at 31 at halftime. The Jackets outscored Grove City 26-15 in the decisive fourth quarter.
Waynesburg had five scorers finish in double figures with
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) leading the way with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) and Miler each had 11 points and Miller added a team-high eight rebounds.
Friday and
Macie Justice (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) each chipped in 10 points apiece. Friday stuffed the stat sheet with seven rebounds and eight assists. Justice set a season-high in scoring and was a game-high plus-17 in her 25 minutes off the Jacket bench.
The Jackets won the rebounding battle 50-44 and shot 36.8 percent while holding Grove City to 29.6 shooting from the floor. Waynesburg was plus-six from the three-point line and plus-seven from the charity stripe.
The Jackets travel to Thiel on Saturday.
