WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 25) – Geneva's Ryan Rachic sank a long baseline jumper with two seconds remaining to deliver Geneva over the Waynesburg University men's basketball team, 64-63, in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 7-11 overall and 5-8 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Golden Tornadoes rise to 8-9, 6-6 PAC. Waynesburg and Geneva split the season series with both teams winning a tight game on the other squad's home floor.
The two teams were tied at 50 with 9:56 left in regulation as
Korey Mitchum's (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett (Md.)) layup knotted the score and began a 13-2 Waynesburg run.
Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) scored three baskets in the spurt and Mitchum added another lay-in. When the dust settled, the Jackets led 61-52 with three minutes left in regulation.
Waynesburg led 63-56 with 1:42 to play after a pair of made foul shots by Baker. Nick Million drained back-to-back three-pointers for Geneva to trim the margin to 63-62 with 43 seconds left. On the ensuing Waynesburg possession, Mitchum had his shot blocked out of bounds as the shot clock ticked inside of 10 seconds. Mitchum had a left wing three go halfway down but spill out, giving Geneva a chance at a go-ahead shot.
After a foul, Geneva inbounded under the basket and Rachic sank a well-contested fallaway jumper in the left corner with exactly two seconds to play. After a Waynesburg timeout, Mitchum's heave missed the mark as the Golden Tornadoes escaped with the one-point win.
Geneva began the contest with a 15-3 run over the first five minutes of regulation. The Jacket clawed back to tie the game at 28 with 4:18 left in the first half. Million hit two threes in less than a minute late in the first half and Geneva carried a 36-30 lead into halftime.
The Golden Tornadoes led 40-32 early in the second half but Waynesburg answered with a 9-0 string that was started with a
Jalen Goins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) three and capped by a
Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) slam dunk and free throw. Geneva went back ahead before the score was tied at 50 almost exactly halfway through the second half.
Baker finished with 19 points, three rebounds and two assists. Mitchum had a season-high 17 points and six boards.
PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Rayshod Hopper (Baltimore, Md. / St. Frances) had a team-high 10 rebounds
Waynesburg shot 20-of-25 from the foul line and 42.6 percent from the field. The Jackets finished with a 24-18 edge in points in the paint and were plus-11 from the foul line.
The Jackets host Chatham on Wednesday.
