LATROBE, Pa. (January 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team started fast at Saint Vincent but ultimately fell 76-66 at the Robert S. Carey Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets fall to 6-6 on the season and 1-6 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Bearcats move to 6-6, 6-2 PAC.
Waynesburg outscored the Bearcats 15-6 over the game's first four minutes.
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) drained a pair of three-pointers,
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) added a triple and two foul shots and
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) began and capped the early run with layups. The Jacket lead briefly extended into double digits (19-8) on a Friday basket before Saint Vincent closed the opening quarter on a 12-4 run to narrow the Waynesburg lead to 25-23.
The Bearcats scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 31-25 lead. Henkins kept the Jackets afloat with three more three-pointers, the last of which gave Waynesburg a 36-34 edge with four minutes to go in the half. Saint Vincent carried a 42-41 edge into the halftime break.
Saint Vincent scored the first six points of the third quarter and pushed its lead to as many as eight (56-48) with 3:27 left in the period. A 6-0 Jacket answer narrowed the margin to 56-54 with just under two minutes to play in the quarter before Saint Vincent scored six of the final eight points to lead 62-56 heading into the fourth.
The Bearcat lead grew into double-digits (69-58) as the Jackets were held without a field goal for the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Wesolowski finally broke the seal and Henkins followed with her sixth trey of the ballgame to bring the Jackets within five (69-64) with three minutes remaining. The Bearcats scored the next five points and held on for the 10-point win.
Henkins matched a career-high with 18 points on six made three-pointers. Friday added 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Wesolowski finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) had eight points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Jackets outrebounded Saint Vincent 44-38 and had a 9-1 edge in second chance points. Waynesburg led for nearly 11 minutes of game time, all in the first half.
The Jackets host Franciscan on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
