WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team wrapped up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a home match on Saturday against Carlow. The Yellow Jackets downed the Celtics 5-2.
Waynesburg's (6-6) sixth win of the year is their most since 2014.
The Jackets picked up the doubles point by winning two of three flights. After freshman
Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) and senior
Julia Corey (Eight Four, Pa. / Ringgold) dropped a hard-fought 7-5 final in first doubles, Waynesburg bounced back with a victory at the number-two spot. Freshman
Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) and junior
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) got the win by a 6-4 final score.
Waynesburg wrapped up doubles competition with seniors
Alli Bailey (Mt. Pleasant, Pa. / Mt. Pleasant) and
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) blanking their opponents 6-0. That victory was only the beginning of a huge Saturday for Burns, who was later named Waynesburg's 2025 Homecoming queen at halftime of its football game.
Carlow (1-7) picked up victories at first and second singles, but the home team swept the final four contests of the day.
Stephens, Umshares, Corey and Bailey all won in straight sets to clinch the victory.
Waynesburg is back in action on Monday, Oct. 6, with a home PAC match against Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
