WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 7) – First-year head coach Bobby Patnesky led his Waynesburg University men's wrestling team into its season-opening dual match against Penn State Altoona on Friday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Lions 45-0, giving their new leader a victory in his first match with the program.
The Jackets (1-0) got off to a strong start thanks to sophomore
Ryland Parker (Ravenal, S.C. / Ashley Ridge), who pinned his opponent at 125 pounds in just 58 seconds.
After neither team weighed in a wrestler at 133, the Jackets doubled their lead to 12-0 thanks to a forfeit at 141 to junior
Brayden Barbao (Donora, Pa. / Ringgold). Again, there was no match at 149, but Waynesburg's advantage grew to 24-0 with forfeits at 157 to freshman
Kaleb McCamick (Bridgeport, Ohio / Bridgeport) and at 165 to junior
Jarvis Thomas (Rex, Ga. / Mount Zion).
The only bout that went the distance in the contest came at 174 pounds, where junior
Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) scored a 9-4 decision. The night's final contested bout came at 184 pounds, where sophomore
AJ Tomaino (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) got his season off to a strong start with a pin in 1:49.
Waynesburg wrapped up the win with forfeits at 197 pounds and heavyweight. Juniors
Isaiah Siwik (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and
Austin Fleming (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg) were awarded the victories.
The night was a success on and off the mats, as the team and the hundreds of fans at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse honored the alumni who were recognized after the victory.
The Jackets get right back to work tomorrow when they compete in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
