GREENSBURG, Pa. (March 17) – The Waynesburg University baseball team scored 32 runs in a doubleheader split at Pitt-Greensburg on Monday afternoon.
Both doubleheaders were seven inning games. Waynesburg (4-10) snapped a five-game losing skid in which each defeat came to a team receiving votes in the national poll. The Bobcats also moved to 4-10 with the split.
All 10 Yellow Jackets who recorded an at-bat had at least one hit, one RBI and one run scored as Waynesburg recorded a 23-8 win in game one. The offensive explosion was the program's highest-scoring outing since tallying 23 runs in a 2019 win over Geneva. The Jackets rallied back from an 8-3 deficit to lead 10-8 late but UPG scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure a walk-off win with a bases loaded hit by pitch.
Game 1 – Waynesburg 23, Pitt-Greensburg 8
Waynesburg set offensive season-highs as the Jackets totaled 20 hits, 23 runs batted in and scored eight runs in the second and seventh innings. Seven Waynesburg batters had multi-hit games, six drove in multiple runs and seven scored at least twice.
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) had three hits, one double, four RBI and two runs scored.
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) notched three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times.
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored.
Connor Hamrick (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) had two hits, two walks, two RBI and three runs scored.
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) scored four times.
Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) collected the win on the mound for Waynesburg after allowing four earned runs in four innings with three strikeouts.
Mo Kiger (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) worked a scoreless seventh.
Game 2 – Pitt-Greensburg 11, Waynesburg 10
The Bobcats led 8-3 after three innings in game two.
Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) cut the deficit in to three with a two-run homer in the fourth and the Jackets took a 10-8 lead with a five-run sixth. Engelmore and Giraffa both knocked two-run singles in the sixth with Englemore's tying the game and Giraffa giving the Jackets a 10-8 edge.
After a strikeout to start the home half of the seventh, the Bobcats went single, walk, single, double, walk and hit batsman to plate three runs and claim the 11-10 victory on the bases loaded hit by pitch.
UPG outhit the Jackets 16-7 in game two but Waynesburg took advantage of five Bobcat errors to score eight unearned runs.
Giraffa had two hits, two RBI and scored twice. Burgdolt homered, drove in two and scored two runs. Engelmore and
Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) each had two RBI.
Waynesburg used five pitchers in the ballgame.
Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) did not allow a run in the fourth or fifth innings.
Matthew Corte-Gaskill (Wake Forest, N.C. / Knightdale) got out of the sixth inning with a double play.
Waynesburg hosts Pitt-Bradford for a doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m.
