WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 22) – The Waynesburg University baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against conference contender Allegheny at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The teams contended with rain, wind and hail over the course of the two games. The Gators (7-7, 2-0 PAC) prevailed 15-0 in seven innings in the opening game and led 11-0 in game two before the Yellow Jackets (4-14, 0-2 PAC) made a late-inning push to narrow the final score to 11-7.
Game 1 – Allegheny 15, Waynesburg 0 (7 innings)
Allegheny led 4-0 after five innings and broke the ballgame open with five runs in the sixth and six in the seventh. The Jackets put a runner on third base in the first, fifth and seventh innings but were unable to bring any runs home.
The Gators notched 15 hits in the ballgame while Waynesburg scattered three hits in the seven-inning game.
Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) had Waynesburg's lone extra-base hit, a double in the first inning.
Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) allowed four earned runs through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth and finished with a final line of nine earned runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings.
Game 2 – Allegheny 11, Waynesburg 7
The Gators led 1-0 after five innings but held an 11-0 lead after the top of the seventh. Allegheny scored four in the sixth and six in the seventh to threaten for another run-rule victory.
Allegheny starter Walker Cunningham allowed one hit and faced the minimum number of batters through the first six innings. Needing to score at least two runs in the seventh,
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) and
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) both doubled in a three-run seventh inning for the Jackets.
Waynesburg brought the final margin to 11-7 with a four-run ninth inning.
Kaden Flambard (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) drove in two runs and ended up on third base via an error and scored on a single by Mount. A double play ended the ballgame with the tying run in the hole.
Burgdolt went 3-for-5 and scored once. Mount had two hits, doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored. Flambard drove in two in the ninth and scored. Giraffa and
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) each notched an RBI and a run.
Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) allowed one run in the game's opening five innings but was tagged with the loss after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Zach Scibelli (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) worked a scoreless eighth and
Nicholas Manko (Upper St. Clair, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) used a double play to log a scoreless ninth.
The Jackets head to Franciscan for a PAC doubleheader on Tuesday.
