WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 29) – The Waynesburg University baseball team was defeated by first-place Washington & Jefferson in both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Presidents (14-4, 6-0 PAC) scored six runs on seven extra-base hits to earn a 6-2 victory in game one. The Yellow Jackets (5-18, 1-5 PAC) led 1-0 after four innings but a pair of three-run homers powered W&J to a 10-1 win in game two.

Game 1 – W&J 6, Waynesburg 2

Waynesburg led 1-0 after two innings but had a runner caught in a rundown between third and home in the first and left two stranded in the third.

The Presidents took a 2-1 lead in the third with an RBI single and runs-scoring double. A two-run homer in the next inning extended the W&J lead to 4-1. The Jackets answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout but left another baserunner stranded on third.

W&J tacked on additional runs in the seventh and ninth to come away with a 6-2 victory.

Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) scored both of Waynesburg's runs and stole a base.

Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) struck out six and allowed four earned runs in five innings. Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) gave up two earned runs in relief.

Game 2 – W&J 10, Waynesburg 1

The Jackets led 1-0 after four innings. Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) doubled to lead off the second and scored the game's opening run on a double play. Vincent Turner (Bridgeport, W.Va. / Bridgeport) smacked a two-out double in the fourth but was picked off to end the inning.

The Presidents tied the game at one with a two-out RBI single in the fifth. In the sixth, a pair of walks ended the day for Waynesburg starter Ryan Opfer (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston). W&J took the lead with a towering three-run homer with two outs to take a 4-1 lead.

W&J's advantage grew to 9-1 with a pair of runs in the seventh and another three-run shot in the eighth. A final run in the ninth pushed the score to the final tally of 10-1.

Turner doubled and had two of Waynesburg's five hits. Giraffa doubled and scored.

The Jackets used five different pitchers in the ballgame. Opfer did not allow a run in the first four innings and was tagged with three earned runs allowed in 5.1 innings of work.
