WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 12) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Chatham at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (21-9, 7-6 PAC) scored three runs in the first inning and four in the sixth in an 8-1 victory in game one. The Cougars (11-21, 3-9 PAC) got even with a 6-1 win in game two after building an early 4-0 lead over the first two innings.
Game 1 – Waynesburg 8, Chatham 1
The Jackets took advantage of three Chatham errors to score seven unearned runs in the day's opening game. Waynesburg scored two runs on a first inning error and added a third on a
Graeson Grubbs (Volant, Pa. / Wilmington) RBI single.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of
Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) grew Waynesburg's edge to 4-0 in the third. The Jackets left the bases loaded the first and fourth innings and two runners on the second.
Chatham struck back with a run in the fifth to bring the margin to 4-1.
The Jackets broke the game open in the sixth with four runs, all with two outs and all being unearned.
Bella DeMark (Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) knocked a two-run double and scored on
Tori Foust's (Blairsville, Pa. / River Valley) two-bagger.
Dilyn Roberts (Sellersburg, Indiana / Henryville) plated Foust with a single to push the Waynesburg lead to the final margin of 8-1.
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) earned the complete game win in the circle for the Jackets. She allowed one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
DeMark went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Grubbs also had two hits, a double, RBI and scored once. Eight different players scored while five Jackets notched at least one RBI in the win.
Waynesburg outhit Chatham 10-4 and drew six walks in the ballgame.
Game 2 – Chatham 6, Waynesburg 1
The Cougars established an early 4-0 lead with two runs in both the first and second innings. Chatham scored on a sacrifice fly and wild in the first and added an RBI single and bases loaded hit batter in the second.
Chatham's lead grew to 6-0 with an RBI double in the fourth and an unearned run in the sixth.
The Jackets broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth with DeMark and
Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) knocking back-to-back doubles. After Rice's double, the next five batters recorded outs as Chatham held on for the 6-1 win.
The Cougars outhit Waynesburg 13-7 in game two and did not issue a walk in the second game.
DeMark and Rice each went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Jackets at the plate.
Madison Baker (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong)was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs in 1.1 innings.
Pressley Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison) gave up one earned in three innings and Wilson pitched the final 2.2 innings for Waynesburg and let up one unearned run.
The Jackets travel to Thiel on Tuesday afternoon for another PAC doubleheader.
