WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 17) – The Waynesburg University baseball team was swept by Grove City in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on Wednesday.
The Wolverines (21-9, 11-3 PAC) scored 13 runs in the first three innings of a 16-6 seven-inning victory in game one. The Yellow Jackets (6-25, 2-12 PAC) scored the opening run of the second contest, but three Grove City home runs powered the visitors to a 9-2 win.
Game 1 – Grove City 16, Waynesburg 6 (7 innings)
The Wolverines put up seven runs in the first, five in the third, and three in the fifth as the visitors led 16-1 after five innings.
Waynesburg tallied a run in the first, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) recorded his 100th collegiate hit with a swinging bunt to lead off the bottom of the first. He stole second, advanced to third on a base hit and scored on a wild pitch for Waynesburg's first run of the game.
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) knocked an RBI single and another run came in on a double play in the sixth.
Marcos Mendez (Ponce, Puerto Rico / Westminster (Md.)) drove in two runs with a double and his pinch runner
Alek Wagor (Manhattan, N.Y. / Cairo-Durham) came home on a base hit by Giraffa in the seventh.
Garrett Comer (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans),
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler),
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) and Giraffa had two hits apiece. Mendez and Giraffa each drove in a pair.
Waynesburg used four different pitchers in the ballgame.
Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) started for the Jackets and took the loss after allowing seven runs in the first inning.
Hudson Pincavitch (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) gave up three runs in two innings while
Bryce Meyer (New Market, Md. / Linganore) turned in scoreless sixth and seventh innings in relief.
Game 2 – Grove City 9, Waynesburg 2
The Jackets used three singles in the second inning to establish an early 1-0 edge.
Noah Gabriel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) knocked in
Hunter Mamie (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) but was thrown at second base trying to advance to second on the play.
Grove City responded with a pair of home runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Sam Bevin's second two-run home run in the fifth extended the Wolverines' lead to 6-1. Grove City tacked on two more runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Kaden Flambard (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) singled and Comer doubled in ninth. Flambard scored on a groundout for Waynesburg's final run.
Eight different players recorded a hit for the Jackets in game two.
Ethan Erhard (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) started for the Jackets and gave up six earned on eight hits in five innings.
Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) allowed one earned in three innings.
The Jackets host Chatham next Wednesday at 1 p.m. for a PAC doubleheader.
