Softball season ends in extra innings against Bethany

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 28) – The Waynesburg University softball team concluded its season by an extra-inning defeat to Bethany in the conclusion of a halted game from earlier this season at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on Monday.

The Jackets finish their season with a 23-16 record and tie for seventh in the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings with a 9-11 league record. Bethany heads into the PAC Tournament with a 26-11-1 mark as the fifth seed with a 12-8 PAC mark.

Waynesburg and Bethany were tied at eight heading into the eighth inning in the second game of their doubleheader on April 9. The contest was halted due to darkness and was set to be completed if the result had any impact on PAC Tournament seeding. The Jackets entered the game needing a win to clinch the final spot in the conference tournament. Thiel snagged the postseason bid with a doubleheader sweep over Chatham to earn the sixth seed for the PAC Tournament, which will begin Thursday at Grove City.

The Jackets were the visiting team due to the game starting at Bethany. Alyssa Rager (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) led off the eighth with a fly ball down the right field line that was dropped for a two-base error. Bella DeMark (Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) advanced Rager to third with a bunt single. After back-to-back strikeouts, Rylee Rohbeck (Oakdale, Pa. / South Fayette) seemed to put the Jackets ahead with a bloop between the second baseman and the right fielder, allowing Rager to come home.

However, after a lengthy discussion between the umpires and coaches, Rohbeck was ruled as an unreported substation and declared out to end the inning and remove the run from the scoreboard.

Bethany needed just two batters to secure the 9-8 walk-off win. The Bison's Destiny Goodnight led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple to right-center and scored on a ground ball to second when the throw home was not in time.

Waynesburg bids farewell to a 2025 senior class that won two PAC titles and reached the PAC Tournament final last spring. The group won a program record 102 games in their four seasons.
