Softball handles Franciscan in PAC doubleheader

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (April 7) – The Waynesburg University softball team posted a pair of run-rule victories over Franciscan in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader in Ohio on Monday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (19-8, 5-5 PAC) rolled to a 16-0 victory in game one and a 18-3 triumph over the Barons (4-12, 1-7 PAC) in game two.

Game 1 – Waynesburg 16, Franciscan 0 (5 innings)

The Jackets scored multiple runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings. Waynesburg led 8-0 after two innings with only three hits.

Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University), Tori Foust (Blairsville, Pa. / River Valley), Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) and Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) drove in runs in a five-run third inning. Alyssa Rager (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) knocked two in with an RBI single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth capped the scoring for Waynesburg.

Wilson struck out the first four batters she faced and allowed just one hit in three innings. Pressley Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison) worked the final two innings, striking out two and holding the Barons to a single hit.

Rice, Mackenzie Kearns (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) and Wilson each drove in three runs. Rager went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Heitmann had three hits and scored four times. Kearns scored three runs while Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) scored twice.

Game 2 – Waynesburg 18, Franciscan 3 (5 innings)

Franciscan led 3-2 after the first inning of game two but a 12-run third inning was decisive in another run-rule victory for the Jackets.

Brynn Charnesky (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland) clubbed a three-run home run and a two-run double in Waynesburg's highest scoring inning of the season. Graeson Grubbs (Volant, Pa. / Wilmington) had two hits, including a two-RBI double, as the Jackets batted around in the third.

After allowing three runs on a two-out three run home run in the first inning, Waynesburg's pitching limited Franciscan to two hits and no runs the rest of the way.

Foust and Katelynn Britenbaugh (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler) added RBI doubles as the Jackets notched six extra-base hits in the ballgame.

Charnesky drove in five runs with a home run, double and scored twice. Grubbs went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Rice and Foust each had two RBI and two runs scored.

Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) picked up the win after striking out five and allowing three earned runs in three innings. Madison Baker (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) did not allow a hit or run in two innings in relief.

The Jackets travel to Bethany on Wednesday for another PAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
