WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 6) – The Waynesburg University football team dropped its 2025 season opener 48-14 to No. 25 John Carroll at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Streaks (1-0) scored touchdowns on their five first half drives and added a pair of second quarter safeties to lead 38-0 at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) got on the scoreboard with 9:56 showing on the third quarter clock on a 61-yard touchdown reception by
Tyler Richmond (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) from
Thomas Burke III (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg). Richmond made a contested catch, broke a tackle and scrambled down the left sideline to score Waynesburg's first touchdown on the season.
Backup quarterback
Luke Hudson (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) led a five-play fourth quarter scoring drive. Hudson found
Giovanni Cipoletti (Amity, Pa. / Trinity) for 13 yards and then Colten Lee (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) for 30 to get inside the John Carroll five yard-line.
Mutwali Stewart plunged in from two yards out to bring the margin to 48-14.
The Jacket defense recovered a pair of fumbles in the second half, setting up each of Waynesburg's scoring drives.
Ewing Jamison (Jefferson, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) forced a fumble on John Carroll's first offensive snap of the second and
Isshak Adam (Carnegie, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) recovered, setting up Waynesburg's first scoring drive.
Dailon Curry (Warren, Ohio. / Warren G. Harding) pounced on a bad snap in the fourth quarter to setup Stewart's scoring jaunt.
Burke completed 6-of-11 passes for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Hudson passed for 52 yards on 8-of-16 passing. Eight different Jackets recorded a reception in the game with Richmond leading the way with two catches for 77 yards and a score.
John Stewart (Lancaster, Pa. / JP McCaskey) led Waynesburg with 11 tackles and
Joanes Polynice (Winter Garden, Fla. / West Orange) had 10 stops and a forced fumble in his Jacket debut. Ewing finished with two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
John Carroll quarterback Nick Semptimphelter set an NCAA Division III single-game record by completing 25-of-26 passes, a 96.2% completion percentage record in a game with a minimum of 20 passes. He threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns.
The Jackets travel to Dickinson next Saturday.
